When setting background colour of view

Forums > Swift

Why do we set the background colour with a "." before the colour itself, this made me think it's and enum but in the definitions the colour is just a simple property.

Assuming you mean something like this:

view.backgroundColor = .red

That is really shorthand for:

view.backgroundColor = UIColor.red

.red is a static property of UIColor that returns a UIColor. Swift's type inference allows us to leave out the leading UIColor and just write .red
