Recently I had small accident with my app development laptop, which had to be sent back for repair.

I had lost some work as a result, as the laptop's memory was wiped.

As I had been using a source code repository, and had been saving my work at regular and critical points, it was relatively straightforward and easy to recover almost all of my work. I only lost a very small bit of work, that I was writing at that time, that was easy to replicate.

The point of the story is use a source code repository, it will save a lot of effort and heart-ache when things go wrong.
