SwiftUI environmentObject passed down hierarchy?

What are the rules governing an environmentObject being passed down through a View hierarchy? I'm hitting a lot of the dreaded "No ObservableObject of type <<type>> found." Perhaps another way to ask this question is: Under what circumstances is a new View hierarchy created? I gather that a sheet presented modally is in a separate hierarchy. Possibly a View presented by a NavigationLink is also in a new hierarchy. But what are the rules?
