Accessing app functions from a widget

Hi all, I'm working on a voice recorder app and I want to make a widget that the user can record something through. Basically, just this interface but in a widget (without the toolbar): https://imgur.com/a/W0g76Nr

However, I'm not sure how the widget can gain access to the recording functions of the main app. Will I have to put them in the same app group? Thanks for any help!
