Day 23, View Builders

Forums > 100 Days of SwiftUI

Hi. I feel that I didn't understand fully how to use View Builders, when they can be useful?

If I understood correctly, ViewBuilders allow us to use more than one view. in our container. Because usually, we can do something like:

SomeComponent {
    Text("Some text here.")
}

The above is equivalent to:

SomeComponent {
    return Text("Some text here.")
}

But if we want to allow something like:

SomeComponent {
    Text("Some text here.")
    Button("Click me!") { ... }
}

Then we need to use ViewBuilder, because we cannot have two returns in a closure. So what the ViewBuilder does is wrap the views in a tuple (a TupleView) and return this new view as the single element.

That is how the stacks (HStack, VStack, ZStack), ForEach, etc. work.

BUILD THE ULTIMATE PORTFOLIO APP Most Swift tutorials help you solve one specific problem, but in my Ultimate Portfolio App series I show you how to get all the best practices into a single app: architecture, testing, performance, accessibility, localization, project organization, and so much more, all while building a SwiftUI app that works on iOS, macOS and watchOS.
