SOLVED: Day 11 - Protocol-oriented Programming

Forums > 100 Days of SwiftUI

Hi all,

Would someone be able to explain why it is better to write the following:

protocol Identifiable {
    var id: String { get set }
    func identify()
}

extension Identifiable {
    func identify() {
        print("My ID is \(id).")
    }
}

Instead of:

protocol Identifiable {
    var id: String { get set }
    func identify() {
        print("My ID is \(id).")
    }
}

The second way seems like it would be more concise and still apply to all instances of the Identifiable protocol.

Thanks in advance!

Freddie

You can't actually do that; it results in a compiler error because protocol methods are just signatures and can't have implementations. If you want to provide a default implementation, you have to do it in an extension.
