PROJECT 4 Mini Browser Hide Bars On Tap feature not working

override func viewWillAppear(_ animated: Bool) {
    super.viewWillAppear(animated)
    navigationController?.hidesBarsOnTap = true
}

override func viewWillDisappear(_ animated: Bool) {
    super.viewWillDisappear(animated)
    navigationController?.hidesBarsOnTap = false
}

This code has worked for us back in project 1. 
Why is this not working in this project? 
What changes should be made here?
